Death Anniversary
Have you ever spoken without being heard? Felt as if your words were addressed to someone incapable of hearing them? At its most basic level, Death Anniversary is a performance structured around the impossibility of communication with a deaf listener. This was the condition I encountered almost every time I presented my work internationally.
The work addresses the condition of being an artist marked by geopolitical burden. It emerges from a situation in which one cannot move through the international art scene as a free subject, because one is always already overdetermined by the weight of one’s origin. Such a condition should be incompatible with the very idea of an international art world; yet for certain artists, it remains unavoidable.
